Seoul-(news wire)–Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: IFNNY) has launched a new high-voltage discrete product family, the CoolGaN™ transistor 650 V G5. The new family is ideal for consumer and industrial switched-mode power supplies (SMPS), such as USB-C adapters and chargers, rectifiers for lighting, TVs, data centers and telecom, as well as motor drives for renewable energy and home appliances.

The latest CoolGaN generation is designed as a drop-in replacement for the CoolGaN 600V G1 transistor, enabling rapid redesign of existing platforms. The new devices deliver improved figures of merit (FoM) to ensure competitive switching performance in key applications. Compared to leading competitors and Infineon’s previous product family, the CoolGaN 650V G5 transistors offer up to 50 percent lower energy stored in output capacitance (Eoss), up to 60 percent higher drain-source charge (Qoss) and up to 60 percent lower gate charge (Qg). These features combine to deliver exceptional efficiency in both hard and soft switching applications. Power losses are significantly reduced by 20 to 60 percent compared to conventional silicon technologies, depending on the specific use case.

These advantages enable the devices to operate at high frequencies with minimal power loss, resulting in excellent power density. CoolGaN transistors 650V G5 enable SMPS applications to be made smaller and lighter, or to increase the output power range in a given form factor.

The new high-voltage transistor family offers a variety of RDS(on) package combinations. Ten RDS(on) classes are available in various SMD packages such as ThinPAK 10×5, DFN 6×8, TOLL and TOLT. All products are manufactured on the high-performance 8-inch production lines in Villach, Austria and Kulim, Malaysia, with a future CoolGaN transition to 8-inch production. This will further expand Infineon’s CoolGaN capacity and ensure a strong supply chain in the GaN power market, which is expected to reach $12 billion by 2029 (Yole Intelligence, Power GaN 20 report).
