Neubiberg, Germany–(news wire) December 2022, 12 — Infineon Technologies (Korea CEO Seungsoo Lee) announced that it is launching the industry's first PFC+hybrid flyback combo IC for GaN-based USB-C adapters and chargers.

USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) is becoming the standard for powering all types of mobile and battery-powered devices using fast charging and Type-C connectors. The EPR (Extended Power Range) standard of the latest version, USB-PD rev 3.1, supports a wide output voltage range with high power supply. Small form factors, unified specifications, and high power capacities with low system costs are important for the development of the adapter and charger market.

It is to meet these needs that Infineon launches the new XDP™ Digital Power XDPS2221. The XDPS2221, a highly integrated combo controller IC for USB-PD, supports high-power designs with output voltages up to 28V with a wide input and output voltage range.

The XDPS2221 integrates an AC-DC PFC controller and a DC-DC hybrid flyback controller (HFB), also known as an asymmetric half-bridge, in a single package. The coordinated operation of these two stages makes it easy to meet regulatory requirements. It also integrates all gate drivers for the initial IC voltage supply, a 600V high-voltage startup cell, and a certified active X-capacitor discharge to reduce external BOM and component count.

By adopting an innovative zero voltage switching (ZVS) HFB topology with GaN-based devices, it achieves best-in-class efficiency over a wide range of line/load conditions. Additionally, because zero-voltage switching and resonant energy transfer allow transformer size to be reduced, system designs using the XDPS2221 can achieve very high power densities.

This new combo IC features synchronous PFC and HFB burst mode operation to minimize no-load input quiescent power. Automatic PFC activation/deactivation can be used to enhance the quasi-resonant multimode PFC stage, while adaptive PFC bus voltage control maximizes average and light load efficiency. When using an external PFC controller, you can optionally disable the internal PFC function.

The hybrid flyback stage uses peak current control operation to achieve tight regulation and fast dynamic load response. To ensure ZVS operation under all conditions, the hybrid flyback features ZVS pulse insertion, including preventing body diode cross-conduction in discontinuous conduction mode. Additionally, the XDPS2221 allows you to easily configure parameters through a graphical user interface to optimize system performance.
